The Builder's Best 110856 is an 8 inch louvered wall vent in white, providing an exterior termination for exhaust ductwork.

The termination is the point at which an exhaust system either works or fails, and it is routinely the least considered part of the installation. Its job is to allow air out, prevent air, water, insects, and animals from coming in, and impose as little resistance as possible while doing so.

Louvered terminations achieve the outward flow and weather protection through angled blades, typically with a damper that opens under fan pressure and closes when the fan stops.

Two failure modes account for most termination problems. The first is a damper that no longer closes, from lint accumulation, a bent blade, or paint applied over the assembly, which leaves an open path into the building. The second is a screen fitted behind the louvers that clogs with lint, particularly on dryer exhaust, progressively restricting the duct until airflow is negligible.

For that reason, terminations should be inspected at the same interval as the systems they serve, and screens should not be fitted where lint is expected.

At 8 inches this suits substantial exhaust duties: bathroom, kitchen, workshop, and general ventilation.
