The DiversiTech 230-WC4 is a four inch wall penetration cover for line set installations passing through an exterior wall.

Selecting the penetration size involves a compromise that is worth thinking through. A hole sized tightly around the bundle minimises what must be sealed, but it leaves no room to work, makes it difficult to pull the line set through without damaging the insulation, and gives no tolerance if the run enters at a slight angle.

A generously sized hole is easier to work with and easier to seal properly with expanding foam or backer rod and sealant, but it removes more material from the wall and, if left unsealed, presents a larger opening.

The practical answer is a hole comfortably larger than the bundle, properly sealed, and covered. A tight hole that has been forced and left with the insulation torn is worse than a larger one that was sealed correctly.

Structural considerations apply where the penetration passes through a load bearing element. Drilling through a stud is usually acceptable within limits, but notching or oversized holes in structural framing require care, and the local code sets limits on both.

Confirm the cover size suits the channel and opening, seal the penetration behind the cover, and slope it outward so any water entering drains away from the building. Restore any weather barrier or vapour control layer the penetration interrupts.
