Airex B Line Set Cover 6FT Black 72C

The Airex 72C is a six foot section of line set cover in black, used to enclose and protect refrigerant line sets on exterior wall runs.

The primary function of a line set cover is not appearance, although appearance is what sells it. It is protection of the insulation underneath.

Refrigerant line insulation is typically a closed cell elastomeric foam, and that material degrades under ultraviolet light. Exposed to direct sun it hardens, cracks, and eventually crumbles away, and the process takes only a few seasons in a sunny climate. Once the insulation has failed, the suction line is bare, and a bare suction line gains heat from ambient air and sweats heavily in humid conditions.

The energy penalty is continuous and invisible to the customer. The condensation is not, and water running down an exterior wall or dripping onto a walkway generates service calls.

Insulation is also attacked by birds, which strip it for nesting material, and by rodents and insects, which nest inside it. A rigid cover prevents all of these.

Black is chosen where it suits the building, though colour selection should account for solar gain on the cover itself.

Confirm the channel size suits the line set diameter including insulation, and plan the run so joints and fittings fall where they can be sealed. Seal the top of the run so water cannot enter.
