The Cabot VAL140754610 is a synthetic fabric pad applicator, 6 inch.

Synthetic is the specification and it is the counterpart to the natural bristle brush in this range: synthetic is what waterborne finishes require.

Natural bristle is animal hair and it absorbs water — put it in a waterborne stain and it swells, goes limp, and is ruined. Synthetic fibres do not absorb water, so they hold their shape and their stiffness in any finish. That makes synthetic the safe choice across both oil and water, and the necessary choice for water.

The pad format is the other half and it is a different tool from a brush.

A brush works material into grain and reaches into texture. A pad lays a thin even film across a flat surface, fast. On decking, siding, fencing, and floors — large flat areas where the finish needs to be uniform rather than worked in — a pad covers ground a brush cannot match, and it leaves no brush marks.

What it cannot do is get into anything. Gaps between boards, end grain, corners, spindles, and rough texture all need a brush, which is why a deck job uses both.

At 6 inches this is the general size.

Pads are close to consumable. They do not clean as well as a brush.
