Red Devil Silicone Sealant RE 08090I

The Red Devil 08090I is a silicone sealant used for general sealing applications around equipment and building penetrations.

Silicone sealants are valued for flexibility, temperature range, and weather resistance, and those properties make them useful around HVAC equipment for sealing penetrations, weatherproofing exterior connections, and closing gaps around equipment.

Their limitations are worth knowing, because silicone is frequently used where something else would work better.

Paint does not adhere to cured silicone. A joint that will be painted must use a paintable sealant, and silicone applied where paint is intended has to be removed entirely rather than painted over.

Adhesion to some substrates is poor, particularly to certain plastics and to damp or contaminated surfaces, and silicone applied over an existing silicone bead frequently will not bond to it.

Removal is difficult. Cured silicone has to be cut and scraped away mechanically, and residue left behind prevents anything adhering afterward, including new silicone.

Some silicone formulations release acetic acid while curing, which can corrode certain metals and is unsuitable in enclosed spaces near sensitive components. Neutral cure formulations avoid this.

Silicone is not a duct sealant and does not carry the listings required for duct sealing.

Confirm the formulation, temperature range, substrate compatibility, and paintability requirements against the application. Apply to clean, dry surfaces.
