The Hardcast DS-321-4 is a one gallon duct sealant for sealing joints and seams in ductwork.

Water based and solvent based duct sealants differ in ways that affect where each is used.

Water based mastics are the general choice. They have low odour, clean up with water before curing, and present fewer handling concerns, which matters in occupied buildings and in confined spaces with limited ventilation.

Their limitation is application temperature. Water based products must not be applied to surfaces below the manufacturer's minimum, since freezing before cure destroys the film. Winter work in unheated spaces is where this becomes a problem, and a mastic applied to cold metal may appear fine and fail later.

Solvent based products tolerate lower temperatures and adhere to some surfaces more aggressively, at the cost of odour, flammability during application, and the need for solvent cleanup.

Ventilation requirements are correspondingly higher, and in an occupied building the odour alone may make them impractical.

Cure time varies with temperature and humidity for both types, and a mastic in a cold, damp crawl space cures far more slowly than the datasheet figure suggests.

Confirm the product suits the application temperature, the ventilation available, and the duct materials, and that it carries the listing required. Apply to clean, dry surfaces at the specified thickness after mechanical fastening.
