The Hardcast CCWI-181 is a one gallon duct sealant for sealing ductwork joints and seams.

Application technique determines whether a duct sealant performs as tested, and a few points cover most of it.

Surface condition comes first. Sheet metal arrives with mill oil on it, and that oil prevents adhesion. Duct that has been in service is dusty. Both must be cleaned before sealing, and this is the step omitted most often.

Mechanical fastening comes before sealing. Sealant holds air, not the joint. A joint relying on sealant for mechanical strength will move under pressure and the seal will fail.

Thickness matters. Mastic applied too thin dries with insufficient body to accommodate movement, and manufacturers specify a wet film thickness for that reason.

Gaps beyond a certain width need reinforcement. Embedding fibreglass mesh in the mastic bridges the gap and prevents the sealant cracking as it cures and shrinks.

Coverage must be complete. A joint sealed for most of its length leaks at the remainder, and the unsealed portion carries a disproportionate share of the total leakage because air finds the path of least resistance.

Cure time should be allowed before the system is pressurised where the manufacturer specifies it.

Confirm the listing, temperature rating, and compatibility with the duct materials. Apply to clean, dry surfaces at the recommended thickness.
