Hardcast Sealant Duct 1G 304148

The Hardcast 304148 is a one gallon container of duct sealant for sealing sheet metal ductwork.

Where sealing effort is directed matters as much as how much of it is applied, because leakage is not evenly distributed across a duct system.

The largest leaks are concentrated at a few predictable locations. Connections at the air handler and plenum, where the duct meets the equipment cabinet, are frequently the worst. Branch takeoffs, register boots, and the joints at flexible duct connections follow.

Return side leakage deserves particular attention and receives less. Supply leaks lose conditioned air, which is a straightforward energy loss. Return leaks draw air into the system from wherever the duct passes, which in an attic or crawl space means hot or cold unfiltered air carrying dust, insulation fibres, and in some cases combustion products or radon.

Return leakage near a fuel burning appliance can also affect its venting by altering pressures in the space.

Sealing the equipment connections and the return side first generally produces the largest improvement for the effort involved.

Testing before and after gives a measure of what was achieved, and duct leakage testing is required in some jurisdictions on new work.

Confirm the sealant carries the required listing, apply to clean dry surfaces after mechanical fastening, and prioritise the connections closest to the equipment.
