Nidec/Emerson Glove General Utility 160L

The Nidec/Emerson 160L is a large general utility work glove for trade use.

There is one situation where gloves must not be worn, and it deserves separate emphasis because the instinct runs the other way.

Gloves must never be worn when working near rotating machinery. A glove caught in a rotating shaft, a belt and pulley, a fan wheel, or a coupling draws the hand into the machine. The glove does not tear away; it wraps, and the hand follows.

This applies to blower assemblies, belt drives, fan wheels, and any equipment where a rotating component is exposed during the work.

The corresponding practice is that rotating equipment should be isolated and locked out before work is performed on or near it, which removes the hazard rather than managing it.

Where equipment must run for diagnosis, the technician should stand clear of rotating parts, keep loose clothing secured, remove jewellery, and tie back long hair, in addition to removing gloves.

The wider point is that personal protective equipment is the last line of defence rather than the primary control. Isolating the energy source is the primary control, and gloves protect against hazards that cannot be eliminated.

Confirm the glove's protection level and fit suit the tasks, inspect before use, and remove gloves before approaching any exposed rotating component.
