The Mueller P151736-R6-1-0BX is a 15 by 17 by 36 inch insulated plenum with R-6 insulation, supplied boxed.

Boxed packaging is a practical consideration rather than a specification detail. Insulated plenums are shipped with the insulation liner exposed on the interior and a finished metal exterior, and both are vulnerable in transit and on site. A damaged liner sheds fibres into the airstream and loses insulation value locally; a dented or scratched exterior looks poor in a visible installation and, more importantly, can compromise a joint if the damage falls at a seam or flange. Boxed plenums arrive in condition to install.

The compact 15 by 17 inch cross section suits smaller capacity equipment and space constrained installations such as closets and alcoves.

Confined installations make sealing and insulation more consequential. A plenum in a closet is surrounded by finished surfaces that a sweating exterior will damage, and leakage from a plenum in an equipment closet discharges conditioned air where it does no useful work. On the return side, leakage draws air from the closet rather than the conditioned space, which is a combustion safety concern where a fuel burning appliance shares the enclosure.

Seal the equipment connection and all seams with mastic or approved tape.

Applications include residential and light commercial furnaces, air handlers, and fan coils.
