The Metal Zinc 24X21X36 R6 is a 24 by 21 by 36 inch insulated plenum with R-6 insulation, for furnace and air handler connections.

The 24 by 21 inch cross section suits larger residential and light commercial equipment, where the blower moves enough air that plenum velocity becomes a design consideration in its own right.

Velocity in the plenum is worth attention on larger systems. A plenum cross section that is too small for the airflow produces high velocity, which raises static pressure, generates noise that carries into the duct system, and makes even distribution to the takeoffs more difficult. Matching the plenum to the equipment outlet, and sizing takeoffs appropriately, is what keeps velocities in a reasonable range.

The 36 inch height provides development length for air leaving the blower to spread across the cross section before reaching the branch takeoffs, which is what allows the system to be balanced.
