The Hart & Cooley 953R6N200024004 is a 20 by 24 by 48 inch insulated plenum with R-6 insulation, supplied for connection to furnaces and air handlers.

A plenum is the transition between the equipment cabinet and the duct system, on the supply side distributing air from the blower outlet into the trunk runs, and on the return side collecting air from the return duct into the equipment inlet. It is the highest pressure point in the supply duct and the point where the greatest velocity and turbulence occur, which makes both its sealing and its insulation more consequential than elsewhere in the system.

R-6 insulation serves two purposes. It reduces the thermal loss from the plenum, which matters because equipment is frequently located in unconditioned or semi-conditioned space.
