Metal Zinc Plenum 16X20X36 R6

The Metal Zinc 16X20X36 R6 is a 16 by 20 by 36 inch insulated plenum with R-6 insulation, for furnace and air handler connections.

The 16 by 20 inch cross section is a common size for residential equipment of moderate capacity, and the 36 inch height provides room for trunk takeoffs and for the transition to the duct system above.

Plenum height affects distribution more than is generally appreciated. Air leaving the blower enters the plenum at high velocity and needs some distance to spread across the cross section before it reaches the takeoffs. Where takeoffs are cut close to the equipment outlet, the branches nearest the blower discharge receive a disproportionate share of the air and those further away are starved, producing a system that cannot be balanced. A taller plenum gives that development length.

R-6 insulation reduces thermal loss from the plenum, keeps the exterior surface above dew point in cooling operation so condensation does not form, and absorbs blower noise at the source.

Seal the equipment connection and every plenum seam with mastic or an approved tape. The plenum is the highest pressure point in the supply system, and leakage here costs more than an equivalent leak further downstream.

Applications include residential and light commercial furnaces, air handlers, and fan coils.
