The McDaniel Metals M16X20X36R8 is a 16 by 20 by 36 inch plenum with R-8 insulation, for connection to furnaces and air handlers.

The R-8 insulation value is the significant specification. Where R-6 satisfies many jurisdictions, R-8 is the requirement in numerous energy codes for duct and plenums located in unconditioned space, and specifying it avoids a plan review or inspection issue on projects where the equipment sits in an attic, a vented crawl space, or an unconditioned garage.

The higher insulation value also improves condensation resistance. A supply plenum in cooling operation carries air well below the dew point of the surrounding space, and the greater the insulation, the further the exterior surface temperature stays above dew point.
