Product Highlights
Description
The Milwaukee MIL48-39-0531 is a bi-metal super tough portable bandsaw blade, 24 TPI, for cutting stock up to 5/32 inch thick, for band saws using 44-7/8 inch x 1/2 inch x .020 inch blades, 3 per pack.
Twenty-four TPI is the fine pitch in this range and the stated limit — up to 5/32 inch thick — is the whole story.
The governing rule is that at least three teeth must be in the material at all times. Below three, the workpiece drops between the teeth, the blade grabs, and teeth strip off the band. On a portable bandsaw that is a ruined blade and, occasionally, a band thrown off the wheels.
Thin material is where that happens. Thin-wall conduit, tubing, and light angle simply cannot keep three coarse teeth engaged, so the blade hammers its way down the cut destroying itself. Twenty-four teeth per inch keeps several engaged in stock as thin as a sixteenth.
The trade is that fine teeth have small gullets. In thicker stock they pack with chips within an inch and stop cutting, which is why the 18 TPI blade exists for 5/32 to 3/16 material.
So pitch follows wall thickness. It is not a preference.
The 44-7/8 x 1/2 x .020 dimension is the fitment and it is absolute — blades are made to a machine's wheel spacing.
Bi-metal welds high speed steel teeth to a spring steel band that flexes around wheels without cracking.
Applications include thin-wall conduit, tubing, and light sections.
