The DeWalt DEWDWE402 is a 4-1/2 inch small angle grinder, a heavy duty right angle tool with a paddle switch and Lock-On, drawing 11 amps, 12 inches long, with a maximum wheel output of 1,400. This item replaced the discontinued D28402.

The Lock-On feature is the specification to weigh carefully, because it divides opinion for good reason. A paddle switch is a dead man's control: release it and the tool stops. Lock-On defeats that deliberately, holding the paddle engaged so the operator's hand can relax during extended grinding — a genuine benefit on long production work where fatigue is the limiting factor. It also means that if the tool is dropped or snatched out of the operator's hands, it keeps running. Many sites and safety programs prohibit Lock-On grinders outright for exactly this reason.

Where a lock-off tool is required, the DWE402N is the same grinder with a non-Lock-On trigger. Check your site rules before ordering, because this is one of the few tool specifications that a safety officer will reject at the gate.

The 11 amp motor is a substantial draw for a 4-1/2 inch grinder and reflects the heavy duty positioning.

The 4-1/2 inch size is the most common grinder format in the trades — light enough for one-handed control, capable enough for the majority of grinding and cutting.
