DeWalt DEWDWE402N 4-1/2 Small Angle Grinder Right-angle grinder 12" 11 1,400

The DeWalt DEWDWE402N is a 4-1/2 inch small angle grinder, a heavy duty right angle tool with a paddle switch and non-Lock-On trigger, drawing 11 amps, 12 inches long, with a maximum wheel output of 1,400.

The non-Lock-On trigger is the entire reason this variant exists, and it is a compliance specification rather than a preference. A paddle switch without Lock-On functions as a true dead man's control: the tool runs only while the operator holds the paddle, and it stops the instant that grip is released — whether the operator lets go deliberately, is startled, or drops the tool. A grinder that keeps running loose on the floor with a wheel at full speed is exactly the scenario this design eliminates.

Many industrial sites, refineries, shipyards, and construction safety programs mandate non-Lock-On grinders and will refuse a Lock-On tool at the gate. If your work takes you onto controlled sites, this is the variant to stock — the Lock-On version, the DWE402, is otherwise the identical grinder.

The 11 amp motor is a substantial draw for a 4-1/2 inch tool, reflecting a heavy duty rather than trade-level design.

The 4-1/2 inch format remains the most widely used grinder size — controllable in one hand and capable of most grinding and cutting work.

Applications include weld dressing, cutting, surface preparation, and general fabrication and maintenance across structural steel, shipyards, refineries, and construction.
