Product Highlights
Description
The DeWalt DEWDW5438 is a Rock Carbide™ SDS+ hammer bit, 1/2 inch diameter with an 8 inch usable length and 10 inch overall length.
SDS+ is the shank standard and it is the specification that governs compatibility. SDS shanks do not clamp in a chuck — they slot into the tool and float axially, which is what allows a rotary hammer to deliver a hammer blow directly to the back of the bit while it rotates. A standard round-shank bit in a hammer drill cannot do this; the chuck absorbs the blow. SDS+ is the smaller of the SDS formats and fits the rotary hammers most trades actually carry.
The carbide tip is what survives the work. Masonry and concrete destroy high speed steel almost immediately — the aggregate in concrete is harder than the steel cutting it. A carbide tip is hard enough to fracture the aggregate rather than be abraded by it.
The 8 inch usable length against a 10 inch overall gives real depth capacity: through a slab, a block wall, or a structural element rather than a surface fixing.
The flute geometry clears dust from the hole as the bit advances, which is what keeps it cutting — a hole packed with dust stops drilling and burns the bit.
Applications include anchor installation, concrete, block and brick drilling, structural fixings, and mechanical and electrical installation.
