The 6 inch wheel size positions this between the ubiquitous 4-1/2 inch grinder and the 7 inch heavy tools, and the middle ground is a real one. A 6 inch wheel covers noticeably more ground per pass than a 4-1/2 inch and reaches deeper into a cut, while the tool stays light enough to control with the two-handed grip a grinder should always be used with. For shops finding a 4-1/2 inch grinder slow on structural work but a 7 inch unwieldy, this is the answer.

The trade-off is speed. Larger wheels carry lower maximum speeds because rim surface speed climbs with diameter, so a 6 inch grinder turns slower than a 4-1/2 inch by design — and 4-1/2 inch wheels must not be run on it expecting the same performance, nor 6 inch wheels run on a faster small grinder.
