Milwaukee MIL48-00-5227 Reciprocating Saw Blade 12 Inch Carbide 1 Inch 60

The Milwaukee MIL48-00-5227 is a reciprocating saw blade, carbide, 12 inch long, 1 inch wide, 60 teeth, 5 TPI, for wood, plywood, and composites, 0.05 inch thick.

Carbide teeth are the specification and they change the economics of the blade completely.

Bi-metal blades use high speed steel teeth, which are hard and which dull. Carbide is far harder — it holds an edge many times longer than HSS, which means a carbide blade outlasts a stack of bi-metal blades. It costs several times as much, and for anyone cutting continuously that is still the cheaper way to work, because blade changes cost time and time costs more than blades.

Where carbide earns it decisively is abrasive material. The composites in this blade's list — engineered lumber, laminated products, and anything with resin and filler in it — destroy steel teeth quickly. So does the grit in reclaimed timber. Carbide keeps cutting.

The trade is brittleness. Carbide is hard, and hard means it chips. A carbide blade that hits a nail loses teeth where a bi-metal blade would survive. This is not a nail-embedded-demolition blade.

Five TPI is coarse, which wood requires — large gullets to carry the chip out rather than pack.

At 12 inches by 1 inch this is a heavy sectioning blade.

Applications include timber, engineered lumber, plywood, and composites.
