The Milwaukee MIL48-00-5189 is a reciprocating saw blade, bi-metal, 12 inch long, 3/4 inch wide, 216 teeth, 18 TPI, for metal, 0.035 inch thick, 5 pack.

Twelve inches is a long blade for metal cutting and the length is chosen for reach rather than speed. Large-bore pipe, heavy sections, and cuts where the saw cannot get close to the work all need a blade that can span the material. A 6 inch blade against a large pipe simply does not reach through.

The cost is flexibility. Twelve inches of 0.035 inch steel is a springy thing. Under side pressure it bows, and a bowed blade wanders off the line and heats up. Cutting straight with a long blade is a matter of letting the saw work rather than leaning on it, and that is a technique point worth passing on — most long-blade failures are the operator pushing.

Eighteen TPI is the general metal pitch. The governing rule is that at least three teeth must be in the material at all times; below three, the work drops between teeth and the blade snaps. Eighteen keeps three engaged in anything from about an eighth of an inch up.

Note the tooth count checks out: 12 inches at 18 TPI is 216 teeth.
