The Milwaukee MIL48-00-5186 is a reciprocating saw blade, bi-metal, 6 inch long, 3/4 inch wide, 144 teeth, 24 TPI, multi-material, 0.035 inch thick, 5 pack.

Twenty-four TPI is the finest blade in this 6 inch group and it exists for one purpose: thin material.

The governing rule is that at least three teeth must be in contact at all times. Fewer than three, and the material drops between the teeth — the blade grabs, hooks, and snaps, usually taking a chunk of the workpiece with it. On thin-wall tube, sheet metal, or light conduit, a coarse blade simply cannot keep three teeth engaged. It bounces down the cut destroying itself and the work.

Twenty-four teeth per inch keeps several teeth in material as thin as a sixteenth.

The trade is that fine teeth have small gullets and cut slowly. In thick stock they pack with chips within an inch and stop cutting entirely, which is why 14 TPI exists for the same length.

So the pitch is chosen by wall thickness, not by preference: 24 for thin, 18 for general, 14 for thick.

The 0.035 inch thickness is the standard gauge.
