Description
The Milwaukee MIL48-00-5163 is a reciprocating saw blade, bi-metal, 3-5/8 inch long, 5/16 inch wide, 65 teeth, 18 TPI, multi-material, 0.035 inch thick, 5 pack.
At 3-5/8 inches long and 5/16 inch wide this is a very small blade, and both dimensions are doing deliberate work.
Length is clearance. A recip saw blade needs somewhere to go on the back stroke, and a 9 inch blade in a wall cavity, a cabinet, or a panel will hit whatever is behind the thing being cut. A short blade has a short stroke behind it, which means the saw can work in a space where a long blade would destroy the far side of it. Cutting a pipe in a wall without cutting the pipe behind it is exactly this problem.
The 5/16 inch width is the other half. A narrow blade turns — it can follow a curve or a scribed line where a 1 inch blade tracks straight whether you want it to or not.
The trade is stiffness. Short and narrow means a blade that flexes and wanders under pressure, so this is a finesse blade rather than a demolition one.
Eighteen TPI is a fine, metal-oriented pitch: several teeth stay in thin material, which is what stops the grabbing that snaps blades.
Applications include plumbing, electrical, and confined cutting.
