An impact wrench delivers torque in hammer blows rather than steady rotation, which is why a tool this size can produce more torque than a person could ever apply with a bar. That is what breaks a seized wheel nut or a structural bolt loose.

It is also why impact wrenches destroy fasteners. Fifteen hundred foot-pounds applied to a fastener specified at two hundred will stretch it past yield, and a stretched bolt does not announce itself — it fails later, under load, in service.
