The Metal Zinc P8202536R6F0 is an MPL-103 series insulated plenum in 28 gauge steel with R-6 insulation, sized 16 by 25 by 36 inches.

The 28 gauge specification is worth understanding. Sheet metal gauge is inversely related to thickness, so 28 gauge is a lighter material than the 26 or 24 gauge used in heavier duty work. For a plenum, the appropriate gauge depends on the cross sectional dimensions and the operating pressure, since a large panel in light gauge material will oil can, flexing audibly as the blower starts and stops, and will be less rigid in handling and installation.

At the 16 by 25 inch cross section, 28 gauge is within the range commonly used for residential plenums, and the insulation liner contributes to panel stiffness. Where a larger plenum or a higher static pressure system is involved, a heavier gauge is the appropriate choice.

R-6 insulation reduces thermal loss, keeps the plenum exterior above dew point in cooling operation so condensation does not form on the surface, and absorbs blower noise at the point where it is generated.

Seal the equipment connection and all seams with mastic or an approved tape, and support the plenum independently so its weight and that of the connected duct is not carried by the equipment cabinet.
