The Metal-Fab P202024-R8-1-0 is a 20 by 20 by 24 inch insulated plenum with R-8 insulation, for furnace and air handler connections.

R-8 is the higher of the two insulation values commonly specified for plenums, and it is the requirement in numerous energy codes for duct and plenums located in unconditioned space. Where equipment sits in an attic, a vented crawl space, or an unconditioned garage, specifying R-8 avoids a plan review or inspection issue and reduces the substantial thermal loss that occurs at the plenum, where air is at its greatest temperature difference from the surroundings.

The higher insulation value also gives better condensation resistance. During cooling operation the plenum carries air well below the dew point of the surrounding space, and greater insulation keeps the exterior surface temperature further above dew point. In humid climates and in poorly ventilated equipment closets, this is what prevents the sweating and dripping that damages surrounding construction.

The 24 inch height suits installations where vertical space is constrained. Where the plenum is short, takeoff placement and balancing damper provision become more important, since air leaving the blower has less distance to distribute across the cross section.

Seal the equipment connection and all seams with mastic or approved tape.

Applications include residential and light commercial furnaces, air handlers, and fan coils, particularly in unconditioned locations.
