Product Highlights
Description
The Jackson Safety JKS29080 is an F50 visor face shield, polycarbonate, IRUV 5.0, shape B, 8 inch high, 15-1/2 inch wide, 0.06 inch thick.
IRUV 5.0 is a shade 5 filter blocking infrared and ultraviolet, and the shade number identifies the job precisely: shade 5 is the conventional level for oxy-fuel gas welding, cutting, brazing, and soldering, and for heavy furnace and molten metal work.
Read it against the IRUV 3.0 in the same series and the range makes sense. Shade 3 is for moderate radiant heat and glare — furnace observation, general foundry. Shade 5 is for the more intense radiant sources, including gas cutting itself.
The boundary that must not be crossed: shade 5 is not an arc welding shade. Electric arc processes need shade 9 to 13 depending on current, and a shade 5 shield used at an arc causes arc eye — a corneal burn that announces itself hours later, long after the damage is done. The shield looks dark enough. It is not.
The 0.06 inch thickness is the heavier gauge, appropriate to the impact and heat of foundry and cutting work.
Polycarbonate gives impact resistance; it crazes under many solvents.
A face shield is secondary protection — appropriate eye protection goes underneath, always.
Applications include gas cutting, foundry work, and molten metal handling.
