Jackson Safety JKS21002 Safety Goggles GPL500 Green Black Anti-Fog 5 IR Single

The Jackson Safety JKS21002 is a GPL500 safety goggle with a green lens, anti-fog coated, shade 5 IR filter, single lens type, black body.

Shade 5 IR is the specification and it identifies exactly what this goggle is for: oxy-fuel gas welding, cutting, brazing, and soldering. Shade 5 is the conventional filter level for those operations, and the goggle format rather than a helmet is precisely right for them — gas cutting produces intense light and radiant heat but no arc, and a goggle is lighter, cooler, and gives better peripheral awareness than a hood.

The point that must not be missed: shade 5 is nowhere near sufficient for arc welding. Electric arc processes require shade 9 to 13 depending on current, and using a gas-cutting goggle for arc work causes arc eye — a painful corneal burn that appears hours after the exposure, when it is far too late.

That mistake happens because the goggle "looks dark." It is not dark enough, and the shade number is not a suggestion.

The IR designation matters as much as the visible shade: gas cutting produces substantial infrared, and the filter blocks it.

The anti-fog coating on a sealed goggle prevents fogging that would otherwise get it lifted off the face. Rinse and blot rather than wiping dry.

Applications include gas welding, cutting, brazing, and soldering.
