Irwin IRW15102ZR Step Drill Bit 2T 6 Hole Sizes 1/16" Increments

The Irwin IRW15102ZR is a step drill bit, type 2T, cutting 6 hole sizes from 3/16 inch to 1/2 inch in 1/16 inch increments.

Compare this to the 1T bit alongside it and the design logic becomes clear. The 1T cuts 13 sizes in 1/32 inch increments across a similar range; this cuts 6 sizes in 1/16 inch increments. Fewer sizes, coarser steps — and that is not a lesser tool, it is a different one.

The advantage of coarser steps is step height. Each step on this bit is taller than on the fine-increment version, which means each step can cut through thicker material cleanly before the step bottoms out. If your work is a common fractional size in slightly heavier sheet, this bit does it better.

The advantage of fine increments is precision — hitting an exact size for a gland or a connector. If you only ever drill common fractional sizes, that precision buys nothing and costs step height.

Step drills exist because a twist drill in sheet metal grabs on breakthrough, tears the hole, and can snatch the workpiece. A step drill self-centres and cuts progressively, leaving a round, deburred hole.

The 2T designation is Irwin's size series identifier.

Applications include electrical enclosures, sheet metal, HVAC ductwork, and autobody.

Users include electricians, sheet metal workers, HVAC technicians, and fabricators.
