The Hart & Cooley 110M is an 8 by 4 inch supply register with a metal damper handle, finished in white.

A supply register differs from a grille in that it incorporates a damper, allowing airflow through the outlet to be adjusted. The metal handle operates that damper, and metal rather than plastic matters over the life of the register: plastic damper handles become brittle and break, after which the damper cannot be adjusted without removing the register.

Register dampers exist for balancing, which is the process of adjusting airflow between outlets so that each room receives its designed share. In practice, balancing is better performed at branch dampers in the duct system, because closing a register damper generates noise at the outlet and simply redirects air to other outlets rather than reducing the total.

Where register dampers are used, they should be adjusted at commissioning and left alone. Occupants closing registers in unused rooms is a widespread practice that raises system static pressure, and if enough registers are closed, reduces airflow across the coil to the point of causing problems.

At 8 by 4 inches this is a small register, suited to a low airflow outlet in a bathroom, a small room, or a supplementary position.

Applications include residential and light commercial supply air outlets in floors, walls, and ceilings.
