The Hart & Cooley 43846 is a 682 series sidewall supply register measuring 16 by 8 inches nominal, with two way deflection, finished in white.

Two way deflection describes the pattern the register throws. The face bars direct air in two directions from the outlet, which suits a register positioned so that air must be distributed to either side rather than in all directions, typically a sidewall location or a position along a wall rather than in the middle of a ceiling.

Deflection pattern is chosen from the register's position in the room, not from preference. A register at the centre of a ceiling generally wants four way deflection to distribute air in all directions; one near a wall wants two or three way so that air is not thrown directly at the adjacent surface. Throwing supply air at a nearby wall produces a noticeable draught, stains the wall over time as dust is deposited, and wastes the throw the register was designed to provide.

Adjustable face bars on many registers allow the pattern to be fine tuned after installation, which is worth doing while observing the actual airflow in the room.

At 16 by 8 inches the register handles a moderate supply airflow.
