The Hart & Cooley 703896 is a 303M series supply register measuring 14 by 8 inches nominal, with a metal damper handle, finished in white.

The step from a 14 by 6 to a 14 by 8 register represents a meaningful increase in free area and therefore in the airflow the outlet can pass at a given face velocity. Where a room is under-supplied and the branch duct has capacity, fitting a larger register is sometimes proposed as a remedy.

It rarely works on its own. The register is seldom the restriction in a supply path; the branch duct, its length, its fittings, and the balancing damper upstream determine how much air reaches the outlet. Enlarging the register reduces noise at the outlet and slightly reduces resistance, but if the branch is undersized or the damper is throttled, the airflow will be substantially unchanged.

Where a room is genuinely short of air, measuring the airflow at the outlet and comparing it against the design value identifies whether the problem lies in the branch, in the balancing, or in the system's total capacity.

The metal damper handle resists the embrittlement that eventually breaks plastic handles.
