The Hart & Cooley 703999 is a 683M series supply register measuring 10 by 10 inches nominal, with three way deflection and a metal damper handle.

Three way deflection distributes air in three directions and blocks the fourth, which suits a register positioned adjacent to a single wall. Air is thrown away from that wall into the room rather than against it.

This is the pattern most often required and least often specified correctly. Registers are frequently fitted wherever the duct layout puts them, with whatever pattern happens to be stocked, and the result is outlets throwing air at adjacent walls. The consequences accumulate quietly: a draught along the wall, a visible dust mark developing on the surface above the register over several years, and a portion of the supply air never reaching the occupied space.
