The ECCO 210558 is a double wall Type B vent increaser transitioning from 5 inch to 6 inch diameter.

Transitions at these sizes almost always relate to common venting. Where two gas appliances share a vent, typically a furnace and a water heater, the common vent must be sized for the combined input, and that frequently calls for a larger diameter than either connector. The increaser is fitted at the point where the connectors join the common vent and the run continues upward at the larger size.

Common vent sizing is governed by dedicated tables in the fuel gas code that account for the input of each appliance, the height of the common vent, the rise of each connector, and the lateral lengths involved. It is not a matter of adding diameters or applying a rule of thumb.
