Yellow Jacket Red Compound Manifold Gauge 49137

The Yellow Jacket 49137 is a red compound manifold gauge for high side service.

A compound gauge reads both pressure above atmospheric and vacuum below it, which is what distinguishes it from a pressure only gauge.

On the high side, compound capability is useful during evacuation and recovery, when the entire system including the high side is drawn below atmospheric pressure. A pressure only high side gauge simply reads zero throughout, giving no indication of what is happening.

The vacuum portion of the scale is coarse and is adequate only for confirming that a vacuum is being drawn. Measuring how deep a vacuum has been achieved requires a micron gauge, which reads on a scale several orders of magnitude finer.

Replacing a single gauge rather than a whole manifold is worthwhile when a gauge has been damaged, most commonly by overpressure from a valve error or a misconnected hose.

Gauges should be checked to read zero at atmospheric pressure before use, and one that will not zero, or that sticks, should be replaced.

Applications include refrigeration and air conditioning diagnosis, charging, evacuation, and service.
