Yellow Jacket Manifold & Hoses 2V 42006

The Yellow Jacket 42006 is a two valve manifold with hoses for refrigeration and air conditioning service.

Manifold maintenance receives less attention than it warrants given that every diagnostic conclusion depends on the instrument.

The valve seats and stems wear with use, and a manifold valve that no longer seats fully allows refrigerant to pass between the high and low sides internally. The effect is subtle and confusing: pressures equalise slowly, readings drift, and a vacuum will not hold. Because the leak is internal, external inspection reveals nothing.

Testing for it is straightforward. With the manifold connected to nothing, all ports capped, and a vacuum drawn through the centre port, the manifold should hold vacuum with the valves closed. It should also hold pressure. A manifold that fails either test has an internal leak or a failed gasket.

Valve packings can generally be tightened or replaced, and seats on many manifolds are serviceable.

Performing this check when a system inexplicably will not hold vacuum saves the considerable time otherwise spent searching for a leak that is in the gauges.
