The Yellow Jacket 21648 is a 4 foot red PLUS II charging hose for high side connections.

High side pressure readings support the subcooling calculation, which together with superheat forms the basis of refrigerant charge diagnosis.

Subcooling is the difference between the saturation temperature corresponding to the measured high side pressure and the actual measured liquid line temperature. It indicates how much liquid refrigerant is backed up in the condenser, and therefore whether the system holds the right amount of refrigerant.

On systems with a thermostatic expansion valve, subcooling is the primary charging measurement, because the valve maintains superheat regardless of charge and superheat therefore tells you little about charge.

On fixed orifice systems, superheat is the charging measurement and subcooling is supplementary.

Knowing which method applies to the system in front of you is essential, and charging a TXV system by superheat, or an orifice system by subcooling, produces incorrect charge.

Both measurements require accurate pressure readings and accurate line temperatures, which means a properly attached temperature probe rather than an infrared reading of a shiny copper surface.
