The Yellow Jacket 15660 is a 5 foot charging hose with 3/8 inch fittings.

The 3/8 inch size is significant for one particular task: evacuation.

Pulling a deep vacuum on a refrigeration system requires moving a very large volume of gas at extremely low pressure, and at those pressures the flow through a restriction becomes the limiting factor. A quarter inch hose, adequate for charging where refrigerant is at pressure, becomes a serious bottleneck during evacuation.

The practical effect is substantial. A system evacuated through quarter inch hoses may take several times longer to reach a given vacuum than the same system evacuated through 3/8 inch, and in some cases the smaller hose prevents a deep vacuum being reached at all within a reasonable time.

Since inadequate evacuation leaves moisture and non-condensables in the system, with the acid formation and metering device freezing that follow, this is not a matter of convenience.

Serious evacuation practice uses large diameter hoses, short runs, core removal tools to eliminate the Schrader restriction, and a micron gauge connected at the system rather than at the pump.

Applications include refrigeration and air conditioning evacuation and service.
