A note on hose inspection worth making explicitly: the fittings deserve as much attention as the hose body.

The swaged connection where the fitting joins the hose is where most failures originate, because flexing under pressure concentrates stress at that point. Cracking in the hose material immediately behind the fitting is the warning sign, and a hose showing it should be discarded rather than used.

The fitting itself should turn freely on its swivel. A fitting that has seized will twist the hose as it is tightened, which stresses the swaged joint and eventually causes exactly the failure described.
