The Shurtape 207113 DC181 is a three inch tape listed to UL 181 for duct sealing applications.

Width selection follows the joint and the overlap required onto sound material each side of it.

A three inch tape suits wider joints, connections at plenums and large fittings, and situations where a two inch product would leave inadequate bonding area. It also covers a joint with less precision required during application, which matters when working overhead or in a confined position where placing tape accurately is difficult.

The trade off is that wider tape is harder to bed down without wrinkles, particularly around curved surfaces, and wrinkles are leak paths. Working the tape down progressively from the centre outward, rather than pressing the whole width at once, avoids trapping air beneath.

On round duct, wider tape requires more stretching around the circumference and is more prone to lifting at the edges as it relaxes. Two narrower passes are sometimes better than one wide one on small diameter spiral.

A squeegee or a firm plastic tool produces far better adhesive contact than hand pressure alone, and the difference in long term performance is significant.

Confirm the listing required for the duct type and jurisdiction, the temperature range, and that the width suits the joints being sealed. Apply to clean, dry, oil free surfaces after mechanical fastening.
