The DiversiTech 9718 is a foam tape measuring 1/8 inch by 2 inches by 30 feet, used for sealing and cushioning applications.

Closed cell foam tape serves several purposes around HVAC equipment, and the distinction between them affects selection.

As a gasket, it seals between two surfaces that are drawn together, such as an access panel against a cabinet flange. The foam compresses to fill the irregularities between them, closing an air path that would otherwise leak.

As a cushion, it separates components to prevent rattling and to isolate small vibrations, which is where much of the buzzing and humming in equipment cabinets originates.

As an insulator, closed cell foam prevents condensation forming on a cold surface by keeping humid air away from it.

Closed cell structure is important for the last of these. Open cell foam absorbs water, and a saturated foam against a cold surface holds moisture in place rather than excluding it, which accelerates corrosion.

Thickness should suit the gap being closed. Too thin and it does not seal; too thick and it prevents the panel closing properly, which can leave a larger gap elsewhere.

Adhesion requires a clean, dry surface, and adhesive performance falls sharply on cold or contaminated metal.

Confirm thickness, width, temperature range, and cell structure suit the application before use.
