The Shurtape 164686 DC181 is a two inch tape listed for flexible duct applications.

Flexible duct connections are a recognised weak point in air distribution systems, and the closure method is what determines whether they hold.

A flexible duct connection involves several layers. The inner liner carries the air and must be sealed to the fitting collar. The insulation surrounds it. The outer jacket is the vapour barrier and must also be sealed, separately, to prevent humid air reaching the cold inner surface.

Sealing only the outer jacket leaves the air path open. Sealing only the inner liner leaves the vapour barrier open, and condensation forms within the insulation where it cannot dry.

Correct practice seals the inner liner to the collar, mechanically secures it with a clamp or strap, then folds the insulation and jacket back over and seals the outer layer separately.

Tape listed for flexible duct is tested for adhesion to the jacket materials used, which differ from sheet metal and to which many tapes adhere poorly.

Mechanical fastening remains essential. A flexible duct connection held by tape alone will pull off, and the fitting collar should have a bead or the connection a clamp.

Confirm the tape carries the listing required for flexible duct, apply to clean dry surfaces, and seal inner liner and outer jacket separately.
