The Shurtape 232623 AF099 is a three inch aluminium foil tape for HVAC and insulation sealing.

Cold weather application is where foil tapes most often fail, and the failure is usually attributed to the tape rather than to the conditions.

Pressure sensitive adhesives work by flowing into the microscopic irregularities of a surface and wetting it. That flow is temperature dependent. Below the adhesive's minimum application temperature, it is too stiff to wet the surface properly, and the bond formed is a fraction of what it should be.

The tape appears to stick when applied. It releases weeks or months later.

Surface condition compounds this in cold weather, since cold metal frequently carries condensation or frost that is not obvious, and no adhesive bonds to a wet surface.

The remedies are practical. Check the manufacturer's minimum application temperature, which refers to the surface temperature rather than the air temperature. Warm the tape before use, since a cold roll applies poorly regardless of surface temperature. Dry the surface. And where conditions are outside the tape's range, use a product rated for low temperature application or a mastic suited to the conditions.

Firm pressure with a squeegee matters more in cold conditions, not less.

Confirm the temperature rating for both application and service, and that the width and listing suit the work.
