The Shook 11014 is a 500 piece box of number 8 by 1/2 inch Jiffy Point self drilling screws for sheet metal fastening.

Sheet metal duct assembly relies on screws to hold joints and seams, and how those screws are placed affects the finished system.

Joints between duct sections must be secure enough that the connection does not open under pressure, particularly on the supply side where the duct operates above ambient. A joint that separates slightly leaks air, and duct leakage is one of the larger sources of energy loss in a forced air system, frequently exceeding what the equipment efficiency rating would suggest is at stake.

Fastener spacing should be adequate and reasonably uniform. Screws concentrated at one part of a joint and sparse elsewhere allow the unsupported section to flex, and flexing joints eventually open.

Screws are not a substitute for sealing. A mechanically fastened joint still leaks at the seam, and mastic or an appropriate tape is what makes it airtight. Screws hold the joint; sealant closes it.

The short 1/2 inch length suits sheet to sheet connections where a longer screw would protrude unnecessarily into the airstream.

Confirm gauge, length, point capacity, head style, and finish against the material. Drive square to the work, at moderate speed with firm pressure, and seal joints after assembly.
