The Duro Dyne 14345 is a 500 piece box of 5/16 inch drill and tap screws for sheet metal and duct work.

Driving speed has a direct effect on self drilling screw performance, and getting it wrong is a common cause of screws failing to drill.

The drill point cuts by removing material, and like any drill it generates heat. Driven too fast, the point overheats, loses its hardness, and stops cutting. It then rubs rather than drilling, generating more heat, and the screw work hardens the material beneath it until it will not penetrate at all.

The visible sign is a screw spinning without advancing, often with discolouration at the point.

Driven too slowly, the point may not cut cleanly and the operation takes longer than necessary.

The practical approach is a moderate speed with firm, steady pressure, allowing the point to cut. Pressure matters as much as speed, since a point that is not fed into the work will rub rather than cut.

Impact drivers are widely used for this work but are not ideal for the drilling phase, since the hammering action does not suit a drill point. A driver with adjustable speed and a clutch gives better control.

Confirm gauge, length, point capacity, head style, and finish against the material and environment. Replace worn drivers and setters, and drive square to the work.
