The Duro Dyne 14340 is a 500 piece box of 1/4 inch drill and tap screws for sheet metal and duct assembly.

Point size determines what thickness of material a self drilling screw can handle, and it is the specification most often ignored.

Self drilling screws are supplied with point sizes conventionally numbered, with larger numbers indicating greater drilling capacity. Each point size has a stated range of material thickness it will drill through, and both ends of that range matter.

Exceeding the maximum is the obvious failure. The point cannot complete the hole before the threads reach the material, the screw stops advancing, and it either stalls or twists off. Screws snapped off flush in a workpiece are tedious to remove.

Falling below the minimum is less obvious. In very thin material the point may punch through without forming a clean hole, and there may be too little material for the threads to engage properly. The screw then spins without holding.

Matching point size to the assembly is straightforward once the material thickness is known, and manufacturers publish the range for each point.

Where thickness varies within a job, as when fastening thin duct to heavier angle or channel, the point must suit the thickest material it must penetrate.
