The Shook 11063 is a 250 piece box of Jiffy Point self drilling screws for sheet metal and general fastening.

Finish and corrosion resistance deserve consideration whenever fasteners will be exposed to moisture, and HVAC work presents that condition more often than it might appear.

Screws in a conditioned interior duct system are in a benign environment and a standard plated finish serves indefinitely. Screws in a rooftop installation, in an unconditioned attic subject to humidity, on outdoor equipment, in a coastal location, or anywhere condensation forms are in a very different situation.

Corroding fasteners cause several problems. The screw loses section and eventually fails, releasing the joint. Rust staining marks the surrounding surfaces, which on visible work looks poor. And a corroded screw is extremely difficult to remove when the assembly next needs servicing, which turns a simple job into a difficult one.

Galvanic corrosion is a further consideration where the fastener and the material it joins are dissimilar metals in the presence of moisture. Fastening aluminium with plain steel screws in a damp location produces accelerated corrosion.

Coated, galvanised, or stainless fasteners cost more and are worth it where exposure warrants.

Confirm gauge, length, point capacity, head style, and finish against both the material being fastened and the environment the assembly will operate in.
