The Duro Dyne 14346 is a 500 piece box of 5/16 inch drill and tap screws for sheet metal assembly.

Screw length selection follows a simple principle that is easy to state and easy to get wrong.

The screw must be long enough that the threads fully engage the material behind the joint, with the drill point having cleared it. A self drilling screw whose point is still within the material when the head seats has not finished drilling, and the threads have not properly engaged.

It must also not be excessively long. Screws protruding well beyond the assembly are a laceration hazard, particularly inside ductwork and in plant rooms where a technician may reach into a confined space. They can also foul adjacent components, damage insulation, and on duct interiors they collect debris.

For typical sheet metal to sheet metal joints, a short screw is adequate and preferable. Longer screws are needed where duct is fastened to angle, channel, or framing.

The point capacity must suit the combined thickness being drilled, not just the top sheet.

Where screws protrude into an airstream or a working space and cannot be avoided, the ends should be protected.

Confirm gauge, length, point capacity, head style, and finish against the application. Verify the assembled joint is drawn tight and that protruding ends do not create a hazard.
