Shook Self-Drilling Screw Pail 10X3/4 Selfpiercing

The Shook 30624 is an 8000 piece pail of number 10 by 3/4 inch self piercing screws for sheet metal fastening.

Self piercing screws differ from self drilling screws in how they make their own hole. A self drilling screw has a drill point that cuts a hole by removing material. A self piercing screw has a sharp point that punches and displaces the material rather than cutting it.

Self piercing types work in thin sheet, where there is little material to drill and the point can push through and form a small extruded collar which the threads then engage. That extruded collar actually increases thread engagement compared with a plain drilled hole in the same thin material.

Their limitation is thickness. Beyond thin gauge sheet, a piercing point cannot displace enough material and will not penetrate, where a drill point would.

The advantage in thin material is speed and a cleaner result, since no swarf is produced. The absence of swarf is worth something on overhead work and inside finished spaces.

Selecting between the two comes down to material thickness, and the manufacturer states the range each is intended for.
