Product Highlights
Description
The Shook 11074 is a box of number 10 by 1/2 inch Jiffy Point self drilling screws supplied for sheet metal assembly.
Overtightening is the most common way self drilling screws fail in thin material, and it happens quickly.
Once the head seats against the sheet, the joint is as tight as it will get. Continuing to drive strips the thread formed in the material, and in thin sheet metal there is very little thread depth to lose. The screw then spins freely, holding nothing, and the hole is enlarged so that the same screw cannot be refitted.
Power drivers make this easy to do, since the screw seats and strips in a fraction of a second and there is little tactile warning.
A driver with an adjustable clutch, set so it releases as the head seats, prevents it. Where a clutch is not available, easing off the trigger as the head approaches the sheet is the alternative, and it requires attention on every fastener.
Repairing a stripped hole means either moving to a larger gauge screw, which engages fresh material, or relocating the fastener. Refitting the same screw in a stripped hole achieves nothing.
The problem is worse in thin gauge material and in aluminium, both of which are common in this trade.
Confirm gauge, length, point capacity, head style, and finish against the application, and set the driver clutch appropriately before starting.
